WE'RE MEETING ON THE RIVER ON SATURDAY, AUGUST 14 - JOIN US.

There is no formal chapter meeting in August but join us, Saturday, August 14 for a day of fishing on the Cache La Poudre River, near Fort Collins (NOTE THAT THIS IS A CHANGE IN VENUE) The headwaters of the Poudre are in the northern part of the Rocky Mountain National Park. The Poudre is approximately 70 miles long, and flows from its headwaters east through Poudre Canyon exiting the foothills near Fort Collins and eventually flowing into the South Platte near Greeley.

The name of the river means "hiding place of the powder" in French and refers to an incident in the 1820s when French trappers, caught by a snowstorm, were forced to bury part of their gunpowder along the banks of the river.

Access to the Poudre and Poudre Canyon is via Highway 14, which follows much of the river, running between the towns of Fort Collins and Walden and is recognized as one of Colorado's premier scenic highways.

The Poudre River contains abundant populations of wild trout with the vast majority being browns. CCA will be fishing the City of Fort Collins' Gateway Natural Area. The Gateway Natural Area is accessed via Highway 14 and is located on the right side 5.2 miles up Highway 14 from Highway 287. Dennis Cook, past President of CCA is familiar with this area and indicates "It's a sizeable, fish-rich (including large!), catch & release stretch with a variety of water types, and can easily swallow many anglers." The Gateway Natural Area is a fee area costing $5.00 per vehicle. The area has a few picnic tables, clean restrooms and a large, shaded grassy area where we can have lunch. Primary hatches on the Poudre are Caddis, PMD's, BWO's, Red Quill's, Stoneflies and Yellow Sallies. Common to the Gateway area are caddis (olive, green) and mayflies (BWO, PMD, trico).  Hoppers, beetles & ants can be good on the meadows North Fork stretch.

This trip will be hosted by Bob Schmidt (see photo), at 303-947-7963, or by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Please contact Bob for more information and to sign up for the trip. Please sign up in advance so we are aware of everyone going on the tripAug 10 - Host Schmidt and lessen the chance we leave someone behind. We can also better plan for carpooling. For those wishing to carpool, participants will meet between 6:00 and 6:30 am on Saturday, August 14 in the Gander Mountain parking lot in Aurora and form up car pools. Departure will be at 6:30 sharp! For those who will be driving on their own, we will be meeting at the Gateway Natural Area at around 8:45.

Everyone participating will be required to sign the Trout Unlimited/Cherry Creek Anglers liability waiver. Parents will be required to sign a waiver for minors on the trip. No exceptions. Waiver forms will be available on the day of the trip and on the CCA website.

Be careful as there is an old (2008) Poudre River trip brochure still on the site at the bottom of the trips.

OUR CHALLENGING JULY TRIP TO THE WILLIAMS FORK

Six hardy anglers had a big breakfast together at the Remington Café in Granby on July 10 and thenWilliams Fork group attacked the Williams Fork. The day was hot and the walk from the parking lot to the river was about a mile. The Williams Fork can be an exciting fishery but the heat that day was been too much for it. When we arrived the water temperature was almost 70F and the fish were taking the day off. The long trek to the river and the mosquitoes kept this stretch of river reasonably un-crowded and those people who were doing lots of fishing didn't seem to be doing much catching.

The various anglers kept drinking water, applying repellent, and going through their fly box to see if something crazy would entice the fish to bite. The trip host, Bob Schmidt finally caught an 8-in rainbow with a wooly bugger about 15 minutes before we struggled out of the canyon and across the long open field (it was about 90F) to the car.

Moral of the story is to bring: 1) a thermometer to test the water temperature; 2) plenty of water to drink; 3) lots of mosquito repellent, and plan afterwards get quickly to a place with cold beers ASAP. Included in the group were Bob Schmidt (host), Kris Buros, Eric Collinge, Brian Creighton, Jason Levy, & Bryan Zales.

REALLY HOT! DOG SALES AT BASS PRO IN JULY

July HD saleThe weekend sales by CCA members in front of Bass Pro Shops in the Northfield Mall on Saturday and Sunday, July 17 and 18, was a smokin' good time. We got the hottest weekend of the summer to peddle our wares. A huge thanks goes out to our members who volunteered for this fun culinary event. The following are gratefully acknowledged for working like armadillos in the blazing sun: Berle Larned, Darlene Larned, Judy Reed, Tim Osag and Ralph Rhoades (the Saturday crew); Bill Bird, Kris Buros, Bud Dickstein, and Bob Schmidt (the Sunday crew). Bill Bird and Kris Buros actually showed up on Saturday as well to lend support and good humor.ds support CCA activities.

The fun reprises on Saturday and Sunday, September 11 & 12, at the Bass Pro Shop. Volunteers are now being solicited for that event. It should be much cooler - all you've got to do is commit to spending 3-4 hours doing low key sales. Volunteers should contact Harry Morrow by email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or call him at (303) 902-9337.

THE JUNE CCA PICNIC AND CASTING CLINIC

Nearly 30 fly fishing enthusiasts, including some beginners, showed up at Utah Park in Aurora for the June2010 Casting Clinic 10 CCA Casting Clinic. Sage field rep Mike Bostwick took the crowd through the mechanics of casting and then coached individuals on their technique. Several chapter members assisted the beginners, some of whom were kids.

Equipment for the group was provided by the chapter, as was a brat and hot dog picnic dinner. Stormy skies cut the evening a bit short. Mike Bostwick commented Aurora should hire him as a rainmaker, since the previous outing last year was also interrupted by showers. New attendees were urged to join members on the summer fishing trips.
