Friends and Colleagues:
An electrician friend of mine is fond of the expression, "many a live wire would be dead if not for its connections."  This month's news clips show how TU's connections among professional staff, volunteers, state and federal agencies, and others can make a difference on the ground.  TU volunteers and staff in Montana successfully stopped groundwater pumping near the headwaters of the Smith River by arguing that such actions would diminish surface flows on the river.  This was an important win not only for the river, but for the fact that the State Supreme Court recognized the relationship between surface and subsurface water flows -- happy news to those who want courts to recognize the link between river health and water flow.
In the East, TU and 17 state and federal agencies completed the first comprehensive assessment of brook trout - the finned jewel of the East and its only native trout.  The assessment is the first installment of the Conservation Success Index (CSI), an ambitious effort by TU to set scientifically credible watershed restoration and protection priorities.  State and federal agencies are our partners, and they take seriously our efforts to help redeem their stewardship mandates.  Taken together, the Brook trout assessment and the CSI will help to ensure that we protect the best remaining habitats while restoring the areas most likely to benefit from restoration.
In Wyoming, a retired Game and Fish Department biologist, an oil company operator, and TU leaders from Cody made the case that the state's backcountry landscapes are too important to be frittered away by short-term development.  Consider that nearly 70 percent of remaining Yellowstone cutthroat trout habitat is found in backcountry areas and more than 50 percent of Colorado River cutthroat habitat in the state is found in backcountry areas. Backcountry landscapes drive much of the nearly $2 billion that hunting, fishing, and wildlife-viewing generate for the state's economy every year.  An energy boom may last 10-15 years, but when left alone backcountry areas provide clean water and abundant fishing and hunting opportunities forever.
In western Massachusetts, 3rd and 4th graders in the Becket Washington School learned about the connections among salmon, free-flowing rivers and healthy oceans.  The Berkshire County chapter of TU helped the kids rear and release 300 Atlantic salmon smolt into Yokum Brook which flows into the Westfield River which eventually finds its way to the Atlantic Ocean.  Sadly, it'll require a minor miracle for one of those smolt to make it back to Yokum Brook through the dam-choked and degraded river system.  More likely, one of those kids will take the memories and lessons to heart, ply a rod and reel, focus a little more intently on their biology classes, and one day become a state fisheries biologist, a TU member or staff, or someone that simply cares about the health of rivers.  Another connection made.  Thanks for your help.
