President's Notes

Dear Cherry Creek Angler,

This is the monthly Club Email that does not convey an attached newsletter, and we try to keep everybody up to date with the goings-on.

Summer’s here, although Mother Nature seems not to know it yet, and chapter outdoor activities abound.

Last Saturday, April 21st, fourteen of us ventured forth on the Tomahawk fishing daytrip. (Two others had gone earlier the day before and were to meet us, but that didn’t happen.) “Early season” is sure the correct description for the weather; the 40-mph wind made tying 6x tippet a real challenge and all of us had more mono-bird’s nests than maybe ever before. The elements weren’t very cooperative, but despite that a few of us dragged in a couple browns there. Then many decided to either seek more comfortable surrounds or try the Dream Stream, and while most got skunked there, one, Mark Scarbeary, gave everybody a lesson and had himself a 20+ fish day, including a 28” brown! Of course – no pictures, and he IS a fisherman after all!!!

The deadline for complete and mail in your
Chapter Survey form and ticket stub for a chance to win one of the four grand prizes is here. Find your envelope and hurry!

At our May 10th Meeting, Tad Howard is the program presenter. This promises to be an exhilarating and informative evening for anyone who enjoys catching big trout and wants to know where and how to do it better.

May 12th – Clear Creek Fishing Daytrip: Our host on this trip was to be Gil Hassinger, our CTU Regional Coordinator and a regular fishing this water, but Gil’s now laid up with an injured back. There also may need to be an alternative destination twist to this trip that we’ll announce at the May 10th meeting, because Clear Creek is already beginning to catch some of the run off and is not a waterway to be on unless you’re kayaking. Whichever, we’ll have a flyer ready then. In any case, watch for a flyer on the website soon. Contact: Dennis Cook at 303-841-3612 or rkymtnangler@comcast.net

Two important service projects are happening on May 19th. Both are important in that they contribute to development of youth. Please make a special effort to support one of them.

The just-published CTU Century Club "Currents" periodical is here: Currents (adobe acrobat file) and has been posted on the website under the Conservation/Environment Page.  As always, it presents information on many CTU issues and general happenings matters of interest top all Colorado members.  The CTU Century Club is a group of Colorado members who have a particular interest in Colorado waters conservation issues and projects, and many also gather at least once annually to fish special waters together.  The "Century" designation is based on their individual contributions of at least $100 annually; these monies are used specifically for Colorado conservation interests.

Sunday, June 3rd is our River Cleanup at 11:00am with the Coalition for the Upper South Platte CUSP), an ally conservation organization. We meet at the Deckers Hotel and will clean up northward toward Trumball. A BBQ will be served afterward. Park on the North side of the hotel. Contact: Dennis Cook at 303-841-3612 or rkymtnangler@comcast.net

Touring the Parvin Lake DOW Hatchery Field Trip on Saturday, June 9th and their presentation will occupy most of our morning, and then we’ll eat lunch and fish the lake and area streams that afternoon and evening. This is the hatchery where a number of cross-breeding experiments are under way, including the important hybrid development of our wild rainbow with the German Hofer rainbow, to better withstand whirling disease.

June 14th is the Casting Clinic, with casting champion Mike Bostwick as our guest instructor. Mike is a five-time Colorado State Casting Champion and brings tons of helpful knowledge and instruction for us. The clinic starts at 6:30pm and is open to chapter members and the general public -- anyone with fly rod & reel. It will be held at General’s Park in Aurora, located in northeast Aurora on Colfax Avenue just East of Peoria in the old Fitzsimons Army Facility. Take I-225 to the Colfax exit and go west about a mile. The park is on the north side of Colfax. A flyer will be available at the May 10th meeting.
