PROGRAM: Buffalo Peaks Ranch River Restoration
Sinjin Eberle
Sinjin
Eberle is project manager for the Buffalo Peaks habitat restoration
project on 4-miles of the Middle Fork of the South Platte River.
When completed, the project will form a contiguous 7-mile link of river
unbroken public fishing with the popular Tomahawk Wildlife Area
river section. Primary emphasis will be on increasing water depth
during low flow periods and providing spawning structure. Stream
banks will be stabilized and re-vegetated, and the riparian area will
be fenced to protect it from grazing cattle. Good access exists
to this stretch of the river and the project will create quality
habitat and improved angling opportunities.
CTU has obtained grant funding for this three-year project located just
southeast of Fairplay, and is working with the CO-DOW, the City of
Aurora landowner, Park County and several other oganizations.
Sinjin also is very active with other CTU statewide issues, serves
as Secretary of the CTU Board of Directors and is a member of the
Cutthroat Chapter. Sinjin holds a B.S. Degree in Environmental
Sciences with minors in Energy and Meteorology, He works
professionally for Lynx Research Consulting as a Research Analyst

The 2007 Camp will be held June 10-16 at the Peace Ranch, a 600 acre
property with six acres of trout-filled ponds, located near the Frying
Pan River just 3-miles from Basalt. Last years Camp was a huge
success, and CTU has increased billets this year to 20. Each CTU
Chapter will have an opportunity to qualify one youth; CTU will select
a youth to attend for any chapter that lacks its own youth
applicant. The official CTU Press Release is attached here.
Youths selected to attend will again be considered on their
qualifications and a written essay about why they want to attend.
Ages 14 to 18, they must have been born between June 23, 1988, and June
18, 1993. After Camp, they also will again be expected to work
with their chapter on a conservation or education project that applies
their new learning. Camp tuition cost is $375, some of which may
be covered by scholarships provided by CTU and/or its chapters.
An Application Form is attached here. It must be
received at CTU with the essay by March 15, 2007. Cherry Creek
Anglers Chapter will subsidize a 50% scholarship for one youth from our
Chapter area, if accepted by CTU. (If you know of a youth who is
applying, please let CCA know by dropping me an email at
rkymtnangler@comcast.net . This is for CCA leadership awareness,
and is unrelated to the application process.)
Additional 2007 information is available by contacting the Camp
Organizer, Larry Quilling, at (303) 543-0939, or by email at
Larry.Quilling@seagate.com --- or by contacting CTU at (303) 440-2937
Ext-101.
Information and photographs from the 2006 Youth Camp is available on the CTU website at www.cotrout.org.
Mark your calendar and begin planning now for a successful day on
this very productive section of the Middle Fork of the South Platte
River. More information about the river, recommended flies and
tactics will be provided in the next newsletter and at chapter
meetings. It'll be a fun day of fishing and picnics in the early
spring sun at the foot of the Continental Divide, about 10 miles
southeast of Fairplay. Let's have a great turnout!
Your Chapter Board held an annual planning meeting on February
10th. One of the important completions was to agree and focus on
what is the mission of our chapter, and what strategies will we pursue
to accomplish the mission. These have been captured in the
following mission and strategies statement.
Our mission is to conserve, protect and restore Colorado's coldwater
fisheries and their watersheds, for the enjoyment of present and
future anglers.
The chapter will support this mission by building its participating membership and promoting programs to:
In
conjunction with the Cutthroat Chapter, Cherry Creek Anglers is also
supporting the unique Canyon Steward program. The Canyon Steward
program came into being in 2006 in recognition of the Cutthroat
Chapter’s de facto sponsorship of the Cheesman Canyon and its
trails. With the Canyon’s 25,000 annual visitors, there is
a continuing need to monitor trail conditions and to provide a positive
source of information.
The current eight volunteer Canyon Stewards have pledged to fish the
Canyon at least once a month in season, wearing their name badges and
lime green vests for visibility, answering visitors’ questions,
advising on regulations, and reporting back any needed physical upkeep
(e.g. trail erosion, missing signs). As such they are emissaries
of the U.S. Forest Service who can’t be in all places at all
times.
Cherry Creek members who are interested but cannot attend the upcoming
training session are encouraged to still volunteer, and a current
Canyon Steward can be assigned as a mentor to provide orientation and
instruction. A Canyon Steward determines his/her own schedule, to
be convenient.
Training: At 9:00am on Saturday, March 24th, Denny Bohon of the
U.S. Forest Service will conduct a training program for our current
Stewards and anyone else who is interested.
**Training will be held at the U.S. Forest Service, South Platte
Division office located on Rt. 285 West, about 6 miles beyond
C-470. There’s a prominent brown road sign and the building
is on the left side of the highway.
If you would like to know more about the Canyon Steward program, please
telephone Harry Hall (303-221-0048) or e-mail (harrychall@comcast.net).
Meetings are normally the Second Thursday of each month in Gander Lodge at Aurora GANDER MTN. (Click here for map and more)
